There are six skills children need to acquire before they can learn to read:

Print motivation: Have fun with books

                       

 Print awareness: Notice print all around

Vocabulary: Talk, talk, talk to your children even when they don’t understand what you’re saying

Narrative skills: Tell stories about everything

Letter knowledge: Look for letters everywhere

Phonological awareness: Take time to rhyme, sing and play word games

NWKLS in conjunction with the State will provide special kits, spaces, activities and
programs designed to encourage these 6 skills. Explore our 6 by 6 website and library spaces, and talk to your librarian to learn more!
